The green Spain, the north
part of the country
The geography of green Spain is
marked by impressive mountains where rivers, as
they open out towards the sea, have formed green
river valleys with an abundance of pastures and
extensive forests of beech trees and oaks. And
then we reach the sea front, more than 2000
kilometres of craggy coastline with cliffs,
magnicent beaches of fine sand, protected
fishing ports and navigable estuaries.

In the north of the Iberian
peninsular, the high Cantabrian mountain
range forms a natural barrier separating the
parched central plateau from the northern
coastal strip known as Green Spain. To the
north of the central section of the
Cantabrian mountain chain, lie the Picos De
Europa, a limestone range approximately 40
km in length (E-W) and 20 Km wide (N-S).

The
Cantabrian Chamois is
the animal most representative of the Cantabrian
mountains range, dominating the higher
altitudes. There are about 6,500 in and around
the Picos, of which over half are found in the
western massif. This beautiful animal is quite
easy to see at altitudes above 1,200 meters.
